My dogs are currently wanted by the authorities for crimes against humanity involving their digestive issues: eating feces, diarrhea, and anal glad leakage are their biggest violations. Each of my pets was rescued from a kill shelter in the southern United States, and had parasites when they arrived. We love them unconditionally. However, their gut health has been of serious concern since Day One.

Improving Pet Digestive Health
Over the years I’ve tried a number of changes to my dog’s diet. Kibble, home-cooked, freeze-dried raw food all result in similar sensitivity. I have found that anti-inflammatory foods such as lamb and beef are better tolerated by both dogs. Their feces did firm up a little but was not ideal.
After speaking to our veterinarian and doing some research I decided to add pumpkin puree to my dogs’ food. I quickly saw a difference, and I’ve listed all the amazing benefits in another article, Pumpkin, the Amazingly Powerful Food You Need to Feed Your Horse or Dog Now. This will always be a staple in their daily diet.
Despite the best food choices, and supplements, my dogs still have intestinal problems. Namely, Beau eats poop and as a result has loose stool and diarrhea from time to time when I cannot catch him before he does it. Gonzo, bless him, has anal gland leakage and will lick his butt on my couch. I refuse to live in this situation!
The logical next step for us was introducing probiotics.
What are Probiotics?
Probiotics are natural bacteria that clean and improve gut health in both humans and pets. Naturally occurring in our own bodies, healthy bacteria serve important functions such as: improving immune systems; aiding digestion; and leaving no room for the bad bacteria that causes vomiting, inflammation of the intestinal tract, and diarrhea that is common in pets.
There are many foods that contain probiotics such as yogurt, which is very popular addition to your pet’s diet. However, the amount of healthy bacteria in yogurt is not enough to make a huge difference in overall health.
Is Bacteria Good for Pets?
Dogs have millions of bacteria in their stomach and intestinal tract. When bad bacteria takes over this can result in allergies, hot spots, lowered immune system, and of course vomiting and diarrhea. But dogs and humans are different so it is important to use a probiotic that is specifically formulated for pets.
My animal massage therapy clients ask often about what they should feed their pets, a question I can only give an opinion on because I’m not a veterinarian or nutritionist. However, I can and do speak from my own experience and as such I must be willing to try it with my own dogs.
Both Gonzo and Beau are in serious need of improved gut bacteria.

Probonix for Dogs and Cats
At a recent pet conference I learned of a brand called Humarian. The company launched five years ago with a human probiotic. In November of 2017, they launched Probonix for Dogs and Cats. Probonix is a small company based in Indianapolis, Indiana. While they began with probiotics formulated for men and women in both grape and cherry flavor, they saw a need in pets and released their new product in November 2017.
I was incredibly intrigued to meet a brand and try their product on my own pets. I was willing to try this product for the following reasons.
1. Natural product. The bacteria strains in their products are 100% natural. Dogs and cats have different strains, but the dog probiotic includes the following:
2. Storage. Probonix strains are in their first stages of life. As a result, no refrigeration is required for your 30-day supply because growth does not begin until the bacteria is in your pet’s intestines. This means I can keep the bottle close to my pets’ food or take it with my when I travel with my dogs.
3. Dosage. I have two large breed dogs that require 8 drops of liquid probiotic per day. Per the company, the dosage is as follows: Medium/Large Dogs (over 30 lbs.) 8 drops daily; Small Dogs (under 30 lbs.) 6 drops daily.
The bottles appear small but it is actually a 30-day supply for only $29.99!
4. Flavor. My dogs absolutely love the liver taste of the healthy bacteria. I add 8 drops to their morning food and my normally picky Gonzo dives into it with gusto.
Due to the above reasons I decided to try a 30-day supply of Probonix for Dogs for both Gonzo and Beau. First impressions: I love their packaging! It’s simple, straight-forward, and very cute. I read the directions carefully but this probiotic is so easy to serve my dogs. While I did mix it into their food, I’m pretty sure they would have let me put it directly into their mouths. I did not do that because I did not want to accidentally give the wrong dose, spill, or let them lick the dropper creating unhealthy bacteria.
I’m not including photos because no one wants to see that. However, my dog’s stool went from light and loose to dark and formed within a few days. As an unexpected bonus, Beau also seems less inclined to chase Gonzo down and eat his poop, but time will tell on that because it is a habit at this point. More successfully, the firmer stool is helping Gonzo to release his anal glands where appropriate: outside and not within the confines of my sofa.
Overall, I’m very well pleased with this product and would absolutely recommend it to my readers and massage therapy clients. More, my dogs are pleased with it and I have seen a huge reduction in crimes against humanity related to my dog’s digestive health.
