Raising Awareness with Remember Me Thursday
What is Remember Me Thursday?
At the BlogPaws Conference this past May, I had the fortune to meet and spend time with a representative of the Helen Woodward Animal Center, who spearheads the pet adoption awareness campaign, Remember Me Thursday.

On September 28, 2017, the entire world will share the importance of pet adoption and shine a light on all orphan pets waiting in shelters and rescues. In 2016, people using #RememberTheRescue and #RememberMeThursday reached nearly 340 million people on social media.” Remember Me Thursday
I Support Pet Adoption and Awareness
This year I am a proud supporter of Remember Me Thursday®. Those of you who follow my blog, Bridle & Bone, know that I have two rescue dogs. Each dog has their own story that I wrote about in Meet My Rescue Dogs Gonzo and Beau. If I stopped to think about what could have been, I shudder. Both my dogs were rescued from kill shelters in the southern US and fostered by kind people who wanted the best for these pups. That is sadly not always the case and many animals find themselves with lengthy shelter stays, or much worse.
I am proud to note that through me my husband has now become a supporter of animal adoption as well. He’s always had purebred dogs from breeders, and since Gonzo has completely realized how important adoption is to these animals. And our family. Our dogs are raised with our young daughters, and vice versa. My daughters now ask what would have happened to our dogs if we didn’t adopt them. It’s hard to imagine them as anything other than part of our family.
There are so many pets in need of loving homes. Whatever breed you prefer, there is a rescue for them. I do have an affinity for mixed breeds apparently. I like big mutts and I cannot lie! Especially this goofball.
Recently with the major hurricanes and wildfires ravaging North America, the need to find homes for orphaned pets is overwhelming. It’s a global need.

We have only ever had rescue dogs and they have all had fantastic characters, but have all had their issues and I am sad to say that our most recent rescue (albeit 3+ years ago now) just couldn’t adapt to a new life. We tried everything possible other than moving house to the middle of no where (we already live in a small village) but sadly her behavior was just too unpredictable and she had to be put to sleep.
With animal adoption and rescue as a whole, I think it is a great idea. However, I do struggle with some rescue centers refusing to ‘give up’ on some animals. As much as I would love to see every get a new chance at life, I personally find that some animals are unlikely to ever live a happy life due to mental or physical reasons and it bothers me that other animals may not get a chance because these animals and taking up spaces long term. As harsh as it sounds, I think more charities need to consider putting some animals to sleep in order to help more animals.
